IMAGES OF MONSTERS IN THE VIETNAMESE MEDIEVAL CHUANQI GENRE

Abstract
Among many types of the images of Vietnamese medieval chuanqi genre, monster is a type of image with rich cultural connotations. Moreover, it reflects the development of Vietnamese culture and literature as well as other cultural meaning and social values. This article analyzes the image of monsters in the Vietnam legendary novels, which consists mainly of four types: (a) monsters are the spirit of the dead; (b) monsters are the deceased evolved into the goblin; (c) monsters are the god reincarnated into the crystal; and (d) monsters are plants and animals and infertility. The article also explores the features, the connotations of the era, and the reasons why the image of the monsters exits in the Vietnamese medieval chuanqi genre in relation to folklore and foreign literature.
