Abstract

The article offers a new approach to Nguyen De and Nguyen Du’s Chinese poetryto learn about the pass images in the poems. Through surveying and analyzing Chinese poems written about the pass and typical and common images on each poet's mission, the article clarifies two basic meanings of this image. The image of the pass in the Han poetry of Nguyen De and Nguyen Du is both a place that creates a feeling of fear, psychology of mourning for the past, and a place to evoke the psychology of separation through the opposition between the two spatial regions “someone else’s hometown” and “my hometown.” From these two meanings, the main purpose of the article is to clarify a prominent feature of reality that medieval people, whether they wanted to or not, had to experience during the intense earthquakes of the 18th - 19th centuries: reality separates, separates.
