Abstract

The Gwangju democratization movement in 1980 is an important historical event, marked the transition period from dictatorship to democracy in Korea. Using the historical - logical methods, the article presents the Gwangju democratization movement in 1980, including the Korea's situation in the late 1970s, the climax of the movement, and meanings of the movement. The results show that the roots of the democracy movement in Korea have appeared since the 1970s – the period of Park Chung Hee, and then broke out strongly until the 1980s. The Gwangju democracy movement in 1980 is a typical one. Although Gwangju Democratization Movement also known as May 18 Gwangju Uprising was brutally suppressed by Chun Doo Hwan's neo-military forces and several hundred civilians died, it left a profound meaning – laid the foundation for South Korea's democracy movement in the next period.
