Trong lịch sử, quan hệ giữa Australia - Ấn Độ được đánh dấu bằng sự khác biệt lớn hơn là hợp tác. Tuy nhiên, cạnh tranh chiến lược Mỹ - Trung từ năm 2017, cùng với mối quan tâm chung về những thách thức an ninh và sự hội tụ lợi ích quốc gia đã đưa Australia và Ấn Độ xích lại gần nhau hơn. Từ đó, hai quốc gia đang dần hình thành một mối quan hệ hợp tác an ninh hàng hải sâu rộng, không chỉ song phương mà còn đa phương. Dưới góc nhìn của Chủ nghĩa Hiện thực về cân bằng quyền lực (balance of power), hợp tác có thể giúp hội tụ lợi ích chung và giảm thiểu tình thế lưỡng nan an ninh. Đồng thời, các quốc gia cũng có thể cùng nhau ngăn chặn những mối đe dọa và thiết lập một trật tự ổn định, bền vững cho khu vực. Bài viết này sẽ tiếp cận hợp tác an ninh hàng hải Australia - Ấn Độ dưới quan điểm cân bằng quyền lực của Kenneth Waltz để góp phần vào việc thảo luận lý thuyết này trong tình huống thực tế.
