Abstract

This paper reviews studies on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) to identify opportunities and challenges in promoting this educational approach. The analysis indicates that ESD offers numerous benefits for individuals and communities while also holding the potential to address global issues such as inequality and poverty. Despite its promise, the adoption of ESD faces various obstacles, ranging from individual-level barriers (awareness, motivation, skills of learners and teachers) to systemic challenges (policies, curricula, resources). Based on the analysis, the paper proposes several solutions to promote ESD in Vietnam, including developing a national strategy for ESD, integrating ESD throughout the curriculum, fostering pedagogical innovation, and strengthening international cooperation.
