Bài viết này xem xét cách thức thơ của công nhân di cư Trung Quốc đã cất lên tiếng nói cho cuộc công nghiệp hóa lần thứ hai của Trung Quốc. Vừa là chủ thể sản xuất, vừa là sản phẩm của sự chuyển biến này, thơ của công nhân di cư thể hiện một phổ hình tượng công nghiệp hóa gồm bốn tầng bậc: cảnh quan vật chất, thân thể thương tổn, phản ứng tinh thần và ý thức được tái kiến tạo. Bài viết phác họa ba dạng thức chủ thể – chủ nghĩa hiện sinh nuốt chửng, chủ nghĩa hiện sinh mềm mỏng và chủ nghĩa hiện sinh bất khuất – thực thi năng lực chủ thể thực tiễn, song khước từ các tự sự anh hùng hóa và các tự sự tha hóa. Đối chiếu với văn học công–nông–binh của cuộc công nghiệp hóa lần thứ nhất, những điểm tương đồng và dị biệt hiện lên: cả hai thời kỳ đều sản sinh văn học công nghiệp từ chính những chủ thể lao động, song cái “Chúng ta” tập thể anh hùng nhường chỗ cho những tiếng nói cá nhân phân mảnh, mà thơ của họ, khác với sáng tác của giới trí thức, bám sát hiện thực Trung Quốc từ tầng đáy xã hội. Bài viết đọc thơ ấy như một chứng ngôn nảy sinh từ chính những mâu thuẫn thúc đẩy công nghiệp hóa xã hội chủ nghĩa, nơi máy móc chạm vào da thịt, thể chế chạm vào con người, làm nảy sinh cả chính lao động ấy lẫn thơ ca của nó.
