USING SKETCHNOTES IN SECONDARY NATURAL SCIENCE EDUCATION TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ SELF-STUDY COMPETENCE: A CASE STUDY ON “MAGNETIC FIELD” – GRADE 7

Abstract
The article presents the concept of sketchnote, a handbook for using Sketchnote, and the impact of sketchnote on students’ self-study competence. Based on content analysis of the Grade 7 Natural Science unit “Magnetic Field,” the study designs a lesson plan that integrates sketchnoting to promote student self-study competence. To assess the plan’s feasibility and effectiveness, a survey was conducted among educators and student teachers regarding their satisfaction and perceived applicability in classroom settings. Results indicate that incorporating sketchnotes into teaching fosters positive results, helping students improve their self-study competence, enhancing students’ ability to explore content independently and think systematically. The study also identifies key behavioral indicators of self-study ability linked to sketchnote use and provides insights from educators on both the benefits and challenges of this approach. Observations during the pedagogical experiment further confirmed students’ active learning behaviors aligned with self-directed
learning skills.
