Abstract

This article examines the strategic role of the South China Sea in Japan’s policy during the early twenty-first century, with particular emphasis on maritime security, trade, energy, and foreign affairs. Through its Free and Open Indo-Pacific strategy and a range of diplomatic, defense, and economic initiatives in Southeast Asia, Japan regards the South China Sea as a critical area for safeguarding vital sea lines of communication, upholding the international rules-based order, and counterbalancing China’s growing influence. The study reveals that the South China Sea occupies a central position in Japan’s regional security strategy. In response to escalating tensions, Japan has strengthened security cooperation with Southeast Asian countries, enhanced the maritime capacity of coastal states, and increased its participation in regional mechanisms. These efforts reflect a shift from a traditionally defensive posture toward a more proactive stance, underscoring the South China Sea as a key factor in Japan’s long-term strategic interests.
