Bài viết phân tích vai trò chiến lược của Biển Đông trong chính sách của Nhật Bản đầu thế kỉ XXI, đặc biệt trên các phương diện an ninh hàng hải, thương mại, năng lượng và đối ngoại. Thông qua chiến lược Ấn Độ Dương – Thái Bình Dương tự do và rộng mở cùng các hoạt động ngoại giao, quốc phòng và kinh tế tại Đông Nam Á, Nhật Bản xem Biển Đông là khu vực trọng yếu để bảo vệ tuyến hàng hải, duy trì trật tự quốc tế dựa trên luật lệ và kiềm chế ảnh hưởng ngày càng lớn của Trung Quốc. Nghiên cứu cho thấy Biển Đông đóng vai trò trung tâm trong chiến lược an ninh khu vực của Nhật Bản. Trước các căng thẳng leo thang, Nhật Bản đã tăng cường hợp tác an ninh với Đông Nam Á, nâng cao năng lực hàng hải cho các quốc gia ven biển và thúc đẩy hiện diện trong các cơ chế khu vực. Những nỗ lực này phản ánh sự chuyển dịch từ chiến lược phòng thủ sang thế chủ động, qua đó khẳng định Biển Đông là yếu tố then chốt trong lợi ích chiến lược dài hạn của Nhật Bản.
