GROUPS OF HOA RESIDENTS IN LAM DONG

Abstract

 

Lam Dong province is a place with many ethnic groups living together, including the Hoa. Applying the method of ethnographic fieldwork, this article studies the history of migration, settlement as well as the development of each Hoa group and discusses the characteristics of their economic, cultural, and social life in Lam Dong. After three times of migration, currently there are more than 14,000 Hoa living in Lam Dong, mainly in Duc Trong, Don Duong, Bao Loc, and Da Lat. The distribution of Hoa people has been influenced by the history of the ethnic groups, the natural conditions, and the general distribution of the population in Lam Dong province. Their main economies are agriculture, commerce – services, and handicrafts. They have clear cultural differences in architecture and beliefs. This research results contribute to identifying the diversity of the ethnic composition in Lam Dong as well as acknowledging the contributions of the Hoa community in the economic, social, and cultural fields in Lam Dong.
