Abstract

On December 17 2014, the US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raúl Castro simultaneously announced the normalization of diplomatic relations between the United States and Cuba after more than half a century of hostility. Since the successful Cuban revolution (1959), the United States has applied a partial and then full embargo against Cuba (1962). This is one of the longest lasting sanctions in the history of modern international relations. Therefore, the fact that the US and Cuba declared the normalization of the relationship is of utmost importance in the history of the two countries and internationally. This event was influenced by many factors. This paper focuses on analyzing the factors influencing the Statement on the normalization of the relations between the United States and Cuba (December 17, 2014). They are changes in the new historical international context, especially the global economic crisis (2008); the situation in Latin America, especially the development of Latin America and the Caribbean; and the situation in the United States and Cuba.
