THE POEM CAO TAT THI CHUNG BY ZEN MASTER MAN GIAC FROM THE VIEW OF STRUCTURALIST SEMIOTICS
Main Article Content
Abstract
Using the method of structuralist semiotics, this article analyses the poem Cao tat thi chung by zen master Man Giac. The poem is a complex organization of signs, an intersection and an unity of poetic language and the language of zen, conveying the philosophical ideas of Zen Buddism: the impermanence of the phenomena world as well as the permanence of “thusness”. The article proposes a different approach to analyse the meaning of this poem: an approach that focuses on the inner aspect of the poetic text. With this approach, the analysis indicates that the deep underlying structural principle of the poem Cao tat thi chung is the shift of the artistic world’s nature from “changing” to “static” This principle enable the researcher to translate and encode “zen thoughts” into the form of poetic language.
