Abstract

This article applies the conceptual metaphor theory of cognitive linguistics to establish and explore poetic conceptual metaphors in Nguyen Khoa Diem's excerpt Dat Nuoc, while emphasizing the close relationship between cultural experience and creative personality of the poet. The concept of an abstract Dat Nuoc has become familiar and easier to understand through the four mechanisms that make up a poetic metaphor: extending – elaboration – composing – questioning. The expressions of conceptual metaphors in the excerpt Dat Nuoc are specific illustrations of the new perceptions of the country, and the thought that the nation is of people, which were created by Nguyen Khoa Diem based on his experience on the natural – social, historical-cultural living environment of the Vietnamese community over thousands of years of existence and development.
