ENGLISH PREPOSITIONS AND VIETNAMESE EQUIVALENTS

Abstract
The paper aims to examine prepositions in English and equivalent units in Vietnamese according to three approaches: lexical approach; functional grammatical approach, and syntactic approach. The research results show that there are similarities and differences between prepositions in English and the Vietnamese equivalents based on the three approaches. The paper is based on the description, statistics, and comparison of the characteristics of English prepositions and the Vietnamese equivalents. The description is developed in three directions: formalized, non-formalized, and oral description. Accordingly, the combination of the approaches to compare English prepositions and the Vietnamese equivalents contributes to complementarily clarify the characteristics of English prepositions and the Vietnamese equivalents.
