SOME EXPRESSIONS OF THE EMBODIMENT THEORY IN VIETNAMESE CONCEPTUAL METAPHORS OF UTENSILS

Abstract

 

This article applies some basic and easy-to-visualize expressions of the embodiment theory into Vietnamese practice, namely through the structure of “word for human body parts + words indicating utensils,” metonymy, familiar conceptual metaphors in utensils to show the unique and interesting ways the Vietnamese people think. Imaginations of utensils by the Vietnamese people are closely related to experience embodiment; the first and easiest way to imagine will be related to the body, then to the experience with nature and culture - society. The article also emphasizes that embodiment is a universal phenomenon. However, with each language, there will be specific characteristics reflecting the perceptions of each discourse community.
