Acculturation strategies OF Vietnam AND Yunnan IN CULTURAL EXCHANGES WITH CHINA

Abstract
Although both Vietnam and Yunnan inherited the cultural heritage of Baiyue ethnic groups (Hundred Yue) and underwent a historical process of cultural exchanges and contacts with Chinese culture in many different aspects, The history has shown that these two countries, two peoples – Vietnam and Yunnan – have made significantly different decisions with “the northern giant.” This has resulted in two completely different outcomes: while Vietnam retained its original culture and national independence, Yunnan is now a part of China, and its culture has been almost sinicized. This study applied the acculturation theory by Redfield, Linton và Herskovits combined with Berry's “acculturation strategies” and Hall's perspectives of cultural identity, aiming at finding out the reasons of the differences in the ways the two countries responded to China and the outcomes between Vietnam and Yunnan in the acculturation history with Chinese culture.
