Main Article Content
Abstract
This article examines the point of view and narrative tone in Vietnamese historical novels post 1975 on the depiction of heroic characters. From different perspectives of storytellers, authors of many novels have variedly portrayed heroic figures in history. When telling a story from a third-person point of view, the authors depict a historical hero with superior and divine appearance and charisma. He is also a threat to any enemy. When narrating from the character's inner world, narrators used semi-direct language and inner monologue. That is when narrator's mentality penetrates into the inner world, the character's torment, suffering, and restlessness. At this time, the national hero also has anger, love, and hate, even mundane; but also restlessness, passion, and longing. The flexibility and constant movement of narrative point of view contribute to the success of the authors to build heroic characters. Besides, the variation and the combination of many voices in telling the story - sometimes the voice of praise is loud, sometimes the voice is deep, and it is deeply emotional, lyrical, or philosophical, then contemplative. Through the analysis of the point of view and narrative tone, we can also see the progress of the Vietnamese historical fiction genre, the capacity, and creativity, the contributions of post-1975 writers in describing the events and historical figures.
