Abstract

Nhat Linh's new product, a “rebellious female character” is extended upon the depiction of Vietnamese women in traditional literature, reflecting the author’s sensitivity to sociocultural changes, especially related to  women, before the first half of the 20th century. This systematic review on the history of literature elaborates on the roles of women by analysing rebellious female archetypes featured in the works of “Tu luc van doan” and of Nhat Linh. Nhat Linh objectively reevaluated the roles of women in families and societies. This lays a foundation for the establishment of gender equality and feminist movements in current Vietnamese literature. This was a powerful and progressive movement in the aesthetic perspectives and logic of a contemporary author, representing an important milestone in Vietnam’s literature progress.
