THE EFFECTS OF FLOOD-TIDE ON THE POOR’S LIFE IN THE COASTAL AREA OF BAC LIEU PROVINCE

Abstract
Since 2005, people living along the 56 km coastline of Bac Lieu Province have faced high tides tending to rise over alarming levels III, which results in many damagesto life and production, especially of the poor – the vulnerable. The study using semi-structured interviews with 233 households, community discussions, and expert consultation shows a comprehensive view of the flood-tide status, identifies five vulnerabilities, and assesses the adaptative capacity of the poor in the coastal region in Bac Lieu Province. On that basis, the research proposes solutions to help the poor respond to flood-tide, ensure livelihoods andhealth, and stabilize life. The researchis also useful for managers of related departments and agencies in making policies towards sustainable development for communities in the coastal areas of Bac Lieu province.
