A VIEW ON THE CONCEPT AND CLASSIFICATION OF FOLK ADAGE IN CHINESE AND VIETNAMESE ACADEMICS

Folk adage is a concise common language with cultural connotations, aimed at consolidating people's experiences and knowledge in the form of short, concise, rhythmic, easy to remember and oral sayings. Chinese and Vietnamese academics have done many researches on folk adage. Using descriptive analysis,  and compare and contrast, this article will discuss the concepts of folk adage in Chinese and Vietnamese academics, identify the characteristics of folk adage, and conceptualise folk adage for common understanding. The results show that the concept of folk adage in Chinese and Vietnamese academics are defined similarly. However, they are very different as regards types. Chinese folk adage includes proverbs, postscripts, and contemplations while Vietnamese proverbs have four typical sentence types. The study provides a scientific foundation for understanding folk adage in Chinese and Vietnamese.
