Abstract

Self-study plays a very important role when learning foreign languages in general French in particular. However, the students of the Foreign Languages Department at Quy Nhon University seem not to be autonomous in learning French. Therefore, in order to find out the reasons and propose some solutions to improve the situation, we surveyed 200 students of the two courses 39 and 40. The findings revealed a common agreement that self-study is an important factor in learning a foreign language, but they are facing difficulties in self-study because they are familiar with passive learning and dependency on teachers. Students mainly analyze the assigned tasks, rather than looking for resources for further practice. Most students are not aware of the importance of reviewing and self-checking their learning process to make timely adjustments in the learning process. When the task is difficult, they tend to discuss and seek help from friends rather than with teachers.
