Abstract

Social-emotional health is an approach from the mental health perspective of social and emotional competence. This article reports on the Vietnamese adolescents’ emotional competence, one of the four components of the social-emotional competence model from the mental health perspective. The result from the questionnaire shows that the emotional competence of Vietnamese adolescents is fairly high (M = 3.87). However, the qualitative data from interviews reveal that the adolescents’ emotional competence is still limited, in particularinappropriate ways of managing and adjusting negative emotions and ways to express themselves primarily learning from the experiences of others, not from recognizing and understanding one’s own emotions. Based on the findings, it is suggested that instructional content should be offered to improve the emotional competence andovercome the reported limitations and other negative influences on the development of social and emotional competence from the mental health perspective approach
