Main Article Content
Abstract
In the panorama of foreign trade in Cochinchina from the beginning of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century, Quang Nam stood out as a bright spot, where took place the busiest trading activities of the Cochinchina government with other countries. During this period in Quang Nam appeared large cities and ports with busy and bustling trade activities and this locality quickly became a trade gateway, a major international trade transshipment center. The research results show that foreign trade activities developed strongly for nearly two centuries in Cochinchina in general and Quang Nam in particular, making a great contribution to the Nguyen lords constantly consolidating and developing the government and expanding territory as well as forming a counterweight to the Trinh government in Tonkin. In the process of implementing policies to promote foreign trade in Cochinchina, Quang Nam received the most investment and support from the Nguyen lords, and foreign trade activities in this locality also brought in the largest source of revenue for the Cochinchina government at that time. At the same time, strong foreign trade activities also help Quang Nam rise to become an important link, playing a major role and contributing in the history of developing the maritime trade network of the region as well as the world.
