A STUDY ON CHINESE CONFUSABLE WORDS “XIAOCHI” (小吃), “DIANXIN”(点心) AND “LINGSHI” (零食)

Abstract
The study clarifies the difference between the words “小吃”, “点心” and “零食” using two criteria of combination and semantic feature. The word “小吃” has the semantic feature [+ local characteristics], [+ cheap], [+ delicious], [+ sold locally], often combined with words indicating place names, words indicating characteristics, traditional, words indicating business unit/place, measure words “顿”, “份”, “盘”, “种”. The word “点心” has the semantic feature [+ sweet], [+ made from flour], [+ small, delicate], [+ as a gift], often combined with words indicating the style of a region, domains in the form “X式”, words indicating business units/places, words indicating containers in the form of boxes or packages, measure words “块”, “斤”, “盒”, “匣”. The word “零食” has the semantic feature [+ entertainment, entertainment], [- purpose of filling up], often combined with words denoting correction, admonition, prohibition, words denoting actions that exceed the allowed number, measure words “把”, “盘”, “包”.
