Myanmar is the only country in Southeast Asia with an unstable and chaotic political environment. The political reform in Myanmar has faced ethnic and religious challenges and conflicts since 2012. This paper aims to present an overview of the challenges facing Myanmar in the first two decades of the 21st century. Based on ethnic conflicts and coups between military and civilian regimes, the country's status as China's "backyard", the author strongly believes that Myanmar is facing increasingly vulnerable to turmoil and going backward. Based on the current challenges, the future of Myanmar is difficult to return to the status quo and affect the ASEAN’s regional security architecture in the following decades of the twenty-first century.
