EFFECTS OF ENSO ON VCI IN THE NORTH OF SOUTH VIETNAM
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study analyzes the effects of ENSO (the El Niño Southern Oscillation) on plant growth based on the Vegetation Condition Index (VCI) for the north of southern Vietnam. The results showed that ENSO had a significant impact on vegetation in the Central Highlands and South Central regions during spring and winter. Not all EL Niños are negative, and La Niños are positive for the growth of this tropical plant. The negative or positive impact of El Niño or La Niña on plants depends on the natural conditions of each sub-region and the season of the year. The negative effects of El Niño on VCI are evident in the Central Highlands in the springand the southern part of the South Central Coast in the summer. The negative influence of La Niña occurs in the winter over the northern part of South Central Vietnam. Among the ENSO monitoring indices, the Ocean Niño Index has the best relationship with the VCI here. Because there is a lag time between VCI and Ocean Niño Index of two months, this index can be used to warn of vegetation growth. In addition, the research results also show that because El Niño and La Niña are less active from May to July and the lag time of this activity with the VCI is about two months, the autumn in this area are less affected by ENSO.
