APPLY SYNCHRONOUS ONLINE DISCUSSION TO DEVELOP STUDENTS’ ENGLISH WRITING AND SPEAKING SKILLS AT DANANG UNIVERSITY OF MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY AND PHARMACY

Abstract
This study aims to investigate the effects of synchronous online discussions on the development of productive skills.Research participants were divided into the control group and the experimental group.Research instruments include pre-and post-treatment Speaking and Writing tests, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews.Results revealed that no statistically significant differences were found between the two groups. However, both groups showed a significant gain in Speaking and Writing competency after treatment. Analysis from quantitative and qualitative data indicated that participants had positive attitudes towards synchronous online discussions.A conclusion drawn is that written online discussion develops both Speaking and Writing skills because it has the same mechanism as oral discussion. Therefore, synchronous online discussion has valuable contributions to language classrooms in general and in English classrooms in specific.
