Abstract

Phu nu tan van (1929-1935) is an important newspaper in the history of Vietnamese modern press and literature. In this newspaper appeared various literary works of diverse genres, including travel memoirs. Travel memoirs in Phu nu tan van exemplify the genre of travel memoir in Southern Vietnam in the early 20th century. This article introduces briefly the genre of travel memoir in Phu nu tan van, focusing on specific aspects, such as its authors, works, main themes, and literary forms and discourse. The travel content shows the sense of connecting the present with the past, the aspirations of harmony, and honoring the national culture. Over time, the travel memoirs in Phu nu tan van not only bring unique values of literature and art but also contain precious documentary images of landscapes and people in different parts of the country, a strange international land with limited travel conditions at the beginning of the 20th century. The travel memoirs in Phu nu tan van have remarkably contributed to the modernization of Vietnamese literature and the social development.
