Abstract

Nguyen Huy Thiep is a short story writer with a unique style. His short stories expose social and human realities. The characters in Nguyen Huy Thiep's short stories are very diverse: lonely people, delusional people, and people who have lost their personalities and moral values. The article applies the psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud to analyze the short story Legend of the Town as well as the complex psychological expressions of the characters in this story. According to Freud's psychoanalysis, the research results show that the manifestations of psychological conflicts and sexual impulses of the characters in the short stories correspond to the structures of the mind and the principle of impulse. The article concludes that the actions of the characters in short stories are primarily influenced by two factors: (1) the movement, the conflict between the unconscious and the conscious, and (2) the rise of the impulse, sexuality in the character's psyche.
