Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the role of environmental sustainability in measuring the City Prosperity Index for Da Nang City, Vietnam from 2004 to 2019. The method of determining environmental indicators is based on the City Prosperity Index framework developed by UN-Habitat. Results indicate that the average value of the environmental sustainability index for Da Nang City is 49.7 according to the UN-Habitat standard. This environmental index is still lower than other components constituting CPI for Da Nang City in which some of the variables are under the moderate level which lower the CPI value of the study area. The assessment of environmental sustainability for Da Nang City confirmed that criteria such as solid waste collection, CO2 emissions, and wastewater treatment are relatively good values. Meanwhile, the criteria such as the number of environmental monitoring stations, PM2.5 concentration, solid waste recycling, and the use of renewable energy are under moderate level in the period of 2004-2019. The findings could be valuable for local government to enhance the environmental quality concerning the city’s prosperity.
