THE PROBLEM OF HUMAN NATURE IN BLAISE PASCAL’S PHILOSOPHICAL THOUGHT
Main Article Content
Abstract
The man in Blaise Pascal’s philosophical thought is of nature, the nature of thinking with the famous claim that, “man... is a thinking reed,” a thinking man or “nature’s most peculiar creature” (Pascal, 2020, p.51) and human nature is a product of Jesus. From the essence of nature and thinking, man reveals contradictions: contradictions between soul and body and contradictions between greatness and misery. To resolve those contradictions, according to Blaise Pascal, the only way is to believe and love a religion that can understand man – Jesus. This article focuses on presenting the problem of human nature in the philosophical thought of Blaise Pascal with the following contents: Natural nature, the nature of human thinking, and human beings are products of God. Then, judgments and assessments are drawn about the value and limitations of Blaise Pascal’s philosophical thought on the human problem.
