Abstract

In this paper, the Appraisal Theory by Martin and White (2005) was used to analyze the sources of interpersonal meaning in legal discourses. The indictment is a genre of legal discourse which will be used to illustrate the appraisal system in composing texts. The analysis results reaffirm that the Appraisal Theory is a suitable framework for describing the interpersonal metafunction of spoken and written discourses. Besides, the analysis of the appraisal system in the indictment shows that affect did not exist in the corpus. The writers of discourse also rarely created “space” for alternative voices, contributing to strong arguments in the indictment. Additionally, the “truths” investigated as evidence accompanied with that feature help the jugde reach the conclusion of the procuracy to prosecute the accused defendants.
