THE U.S. FACTOR IN POLITICAL AND SECURITY RELATIONS BETWEEN SOUTH KOREA AND NORTH KOREA SINCE THE END OF THE COLD WAR

Abstract
The U.S. factor in political and security relations between South Korea and the DPRK (North Korea) since the end of the Cold War to date (2022) was studied based on documents from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, the United States Department of State, and official statements from the DPRK. The article focuses on analyzing the role of the U.S. factor in South Korea-DPRK relations since the Cold War in politics and security. In particular, the article presents the history and the evolution of the US-South Korea-North Korea trilateral relationship from the end of the Cold War until the end of President Moon Jae-in's term (2022) under the influence of the U.S. factor. Then, the article also generalizes the essential points about the U.S. role in inter-Korean political and security relations. Then the paper will comment and evaluate the U.S. factor's impact on North-South Korea relations.
