Abstract

The process-based approach and the genre-based approach are two approaches that teachers can apply in teaching writing to help learners form and develop their writing skills. This article studies some contents, such as concepts, benefits, and limitations of the two approaches. The article also studies how to apply a combination of these approaches in the same writing lesson. It is noted that genre-based approach is approriate in the stage of forming knowledge about the text type for learners. However, when learners are at the practice phase, the teacher can guide them using the process approach. Based on the research results and some illustrative examples, the article contributes to affirming the necessity of teaching writing based on a method that combines two approaches: the process and genre based. It also introduces the steps that teachers can follow when applying this method.
