Abstract

Coastal wetland ecosystems are of great value to mankind, but are facing several negative impacts caused by increasing human needs and economic development. This study applied the DPSIR model framework (dynamics - pressure - status - impact - responses) to generalize the risk factors for environmental degradation of Con Dao National Park's wetland ecosystem, including: increasing the amount of solid waste, ocean waste, wastewater; increasing demand for electricity and freshwater; climate change, along with conservation policies and models of local governments, residents, and businesses. The research results show the risks of overloading of the treatment capacity of solid waste and wastewater. The results also show a risk of overload in providing fresh water or failure to provide sufficient beach tourism. They are major challenges facing the local government, Con Dao National Park’s Management Board as well as local communities. This is the basis for the local governments to refer to in the decision-making process for the wise use of wetlands in Con Dao National Park.
