Abstract

The paper applies the theory of conceptual metaphors of category indicating plants of cognitive linguistics to establish conceptual metaphors in Thich Nhat Hanh's prose. Data were analyzed from seven prose works of Thich Nhat Hanh, including three main genres: long stories, short stories, and vignettes written originally in Vietnamese. The analysis shows the conceptual metaphors of category indicating plants, including (1) HUMANS ARE SEEDS, (2) HUMANS BEING LIBERATED ARE FLOWERS, (3) HUMANS ARE PLANTS, and a secondary metaphor (4) HUMANS ARE STUMPS. The paper also discusses the backgrounds of these conceptual metaphors, emphasizing the relationship between ecosystem education ideology and the plant conceptualization in Thich Nhat Hanh's prose.
