STUDENTS’ SELF-ASSESSMENT ON COMPETENCIES DRAFTED IN STANDARDS FOR PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY AT PHAM NGOC THACH UNIVERSITY OF MEDICINE IN 2022

Abstract

 

Program learning outcomes are the affirmation by higher education institutions of the what a graduates can do upon graduation. Students’ self-assessing students’ learning based one the predefined Program Learning Outcomes (PLO) is necessary. This study aims to ask third- and fourth-year students to self-assess their competencies against the outcomes drafted for Bachelor of Science in Medical laboratory technology at Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine in 2022. The results showed the level of self-reported competencies is high (M = 3.60 – 4.38, SD = 0.649 – 0.891) for all PLO1 – PLO9. They rated highest for the outcomes of autonomy and responsibility (M = 4.38, SD = 0.652) and the one of professional practice skills (M = 4.36, SD = 0.649). The limited one were their competencies of foreign language skills (M = 3.60, SD = 0.873) and the one of knowledge about politics and law (M= 3.73, SD = 0.891). Following the result of this study, Pham Ngoc Thach University will revise the PLOs, the curriculum, teaching methods, and assessment activities to improve the quality of teaching and learning, the graduates’ competencies to adapt the increasing demand of the labor market.
