Abstract

This article synthesizes three research approaches to working engagement (WE): (1) WE is a psychological state; (2) WE is a behavior; and (3) WE is a construct of distinct characteristics. By viewing WE as a psychological state, the article defines WE as "a positive, fulfilling state of mind characterized by work-related well-being and the establishment of meaningful professional relationships in one's working environment, characterized by vigor, dedication, and absorption." Corresponding to this conceptualization, the article identifies three facets of WE as (1) vigor, (2) dedication, and (3) absorption. WE has four fundamental characteristics: WE is a positive psychological state of the individual, WE is not fixed but fluctuates over time depending on specific situational demands, WE can be predicted by a range of individual and external factors, and WE has many consequences for individuals and organizations. The article also discusses the job demands-resources model (JD-R model), a model with significant implications when studying WE in relation to related factors in the working environment of employees.
