ROTENONE EXTRACTION FROM Derris elliptica ROOTS FOR PRODUCING A HERBAL INSECTICIDES TO CONTROL Plutella xylostella larvae ON BROCCOLI IN TIEN GIANG PROVINCE
Main Article Content
Abstract
Derris elliptica is a traditional medicine that often grows wild on agricultural lands. The roots of the Derris elliptica have been shown to contain the main active ingredient, rotenone, which significantly toxin to fish and invertebrate species. In this study, the roots of Derris elliptica were extracted to obtain rotenone, then emulsified to obtain herbal insecticides. Subsequently, the effectiveness of killing Plutella xylostella larvae was investigated on broccoli in Tien Giang province. The results showed that rotenone was able to kill the insects effectively after six months, the insecticidal performance reached 82.18%. The concentration inhibiting 70% of larvae was 0.0252%. The experimental results at the greenhouse condition showed that the effectiveness of insect control was over 70% at seven days after the second treatment. In the field experiment, the effectiveness reached 70.77%. These results exhibit the potential application of using rotenone from the roots of Derris elliptica to create natural, , and effective insecticides.
