ANALYSIS OF FIVE DEATHBED POEMS BY THICH QUANG DUC IN RELATION TO THE LOTUS SUTRA

Abstract
The article analyzes five poems by the Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc from the perspective of the Lotus Sutra. The analysis was conducted by adapting a cultural history, legendary criticism, and poetic approaches. The study results show that three main characteristics of the Lotus Sutra: One Vehicle, Universality, and Permanence, are effective in clarifying the meaning and artistic values of the five poems. Particularly, the outstanding art of the Lotus Sutra influences how to define the values of the poems, along with the values of social transformation in the southern region that these poems and the self-immolation of the Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc brought about.
