Abstract

Suicide as well as suicide attempt is becoming more common and severely affects the mental health of Vietnamese adolescents. However, psychological research on this topic is still limited in the Vietnamese context. This study was conducted with the aim of discovering and analyzing the psychological characteristics of suicidal attempt behavior in adolescents. Using a qualitative research design focusing on in-depth interviews with five participants who have committed suicide attempts, the study found some common characteristics of this behavior, including (1) inadequate awareness of the meaning of life, self-esteem, and life goals, (2) the prevalence of emotional outbursts and intrusive memories,; and (3) lack of social connection and tendency to self-isolate after a suicide attempt. These findings broaden researchers' understanding of the essence of adolescent suicide attempts. This is an important theoretical and practical basis for proposing appropriate psychological prevention and intervention strategies for this behavior in Vietnam.
