Abstract

Eco-tourism is emphasized as one of the most effective tools to reconcile conservation and development purposes. Dak Lak province is rich in ecotourism potential based on the abundance and characteristics of 2 national parks, 5 conservation areas, 321 lakes, and 17 waterfalls, as well as a wonderful cultural mix of 49 ethnic groups. The main objective of the study is to define and evaluate the potential of ecotourism in Dak Lak province as a foundation for local, sustainable tourism development orientation. The study applied six methods simultaneously, including field survey, document analysis, string analysis utilizing cause-and-effect diagrams, sociological investigation, analytic hierarchy process (AHP) combined with the VIKOR, and map method. The results of the study enabled the identification of tourism sub-regions: two very convenient geographical, one fairly convenient region with three sub-regions , one moderately convenient sub-region, one less convenient sub-region, and three extremely less convenient sub-regions. Based on these categories, it is suggested to develop the spatial ecotourism comprising two nuclear clusters, four auxiliary clusters, and the  natural-based tourism products by region.
