EMPTINESS IN BUDDHIST LITERATURE UNDER THE LE - NGUYEN DYNASTIES
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study aims to explore the emptiness which is considered as a basic ontological topic in Buddhist literature during the Le - Nguyen dynasties. Besides, the approach of poetics, cultural studies and religious studies will be used to analyze the influence of emptiness in the poetry of the two main creative forces, including Zen masters and Confucian scholars. Under the influence of the Heart of Perfect Wisdom Sutra, their poets comprehensively expressed a thoughtful understanding of emptiness. They regarded "emptiness" to be the actual nature of all things; thus, they used the term "form - emptiness" to simultaneously signify its existence as well as proclaim its impermanence and "anatta" (or non-self). As a result, the absorption and expression of emptiness not only indicated the influence of Buddhist ideology on a part of the literature of the Le - Nguyen dynasties but also contributed to clarifying the world view and the approach to life of the contemporary intelligentsia.
