Abstract

The fragment is an unconventional type of sentence that has piqued the interest of many researchers over the years, yet it still requires further exploration and consensus among specialists. According to systemic functional grammar, linguistics is a network of choices, presenting either one option or another. Consequently, a fragment structure in the form of a word or phrase can be an appropriate choice for a character communicating in a specific situation. A fragment is a minimalist expression, the shortest in presentation, but still contains formal grammatical relationships and has its framework. Based on the analysis of Nguyen Cong Hoan's short stories, this article investigates the syntactics of Vietnamese fragments. It establishes a structural pattern of fragments and sentence patterns revolving around two distinct groups: the appearance of basic grammatical methods and the possibility of forming elements in Vietnamese fragments according to the typical level. This article has constructed a fragment framework and identified 7 sentence patterns corresponding to 11 fragment structure types. It has analyzed and illustrated the actual structure of fragments and drawn conclusions regarding the typical level of frequency of appearance in texts of this type
of sentence.
