Abstract

From the perspective of ecocriticism, this article examines contemporary Vietnamese prose and questions the discourses that write about the relationship between humans and nature in pastoral, rural, and romantic literature to uncover behind the myths the beauties that have perished. We face a rural area that is destitute, poor, illiterate, insecure, and invaded by urban products. The research results show that there is a new sense when writing about the countryside, the "anti-romantic" trend. This trend is identified by investigating the anti-romanticist viewpoint, the plot motif of coming home, or the journey of leaving the countryside to recognize the peaceful place that has been deformed by the fluctuations of the market economy. By de-mythologizing pastoral literature, contemporary Vietnamese literature has developed a trend of writing that is devoted to the life of poor farmers. That way of writing connects literature with essential issues about human responsibility in sustainable development.
