Abstract

A study on the trematode prevalence (cercariae stage) in snails in 30 earthen ponds culturing fish was implemented in October 2023 (the wet season) and January 2024 (the dry season) in Duc Hue district, Long An Province. This research was carried out to identify whether pleurolophocercous cercariae existed in snails in these fishponds or not to find the pathogen of trematodes in fish. In 1,976 collected snails, 10 snail species belonging to 9 genera and 6 families were identified based on morphological characteristics. Among them, five snail species having cercariae were Melanoides tuberculata, Idiopoma umbilicata, Bithynia siamensis, Filopaludina martensi martensi, and Filopaludina sumatrensis with a prevalence of 56.7%, 50.0%, 30.0%, 3.7%, and 2.7%, respectively. Pleurolophocercous cercariae were recovered from Melanoides tuberculata and Bithynia siamensis. The research result showed that these two snail species were one of the pathogens of trematodes in fish cultured in ponds. It is suggested that there be a plan to control the trematodes and develop fish culture in the areas.
