PLACE AS THE BEDROCK FOR TRAUMA OF POST-WAR WOMEN IN “NGUOI O BEN SONG CHAU” AND “NGUOI TRO VE”

Abstract
This article applies Michelle Balaev's critical frameworks on trauma to examine the adaptation of the short narrative “Nguoi o ben song Chau” into the cinematic rendition “Nguoi tro ve.” Utilizing a pluralistic model, the study underscores the significant role of place in shaping characters’ responses to trauma. t focuses on three key locations central to the characters’ traumatic experiences: the Chau River wharf, Lieu's house, and the battlefield. This inquiry elucidates the variances in representing trauma through the configuration of setting in literary parlance and through cinematic devices, thereby highlighting the intimate correlation between place and the characters' mechanism for handling traumatic recollections.
