Abstract

This study proposes an artificial neural network (ANN)-based method for determining the self-absorption correction factor in gamma spectrometry environmental samples. The method takes into account characteristics such as atomic number, bulk density, and photon energy. The ANN model was trained and tested on a dataset comprising 2,575 data points, achieving high predictive accuracy, with an average R² of 0.88 (ranging from 0.54 to 0.97), an average RMSE of 0.13 (ranging from 0.07 to 0.27), and an average MAE of 0.10 (ranging from 0.05 to 0.21). Moreover, the relative deviation was less than 12%, which indicates that the ANN-predicted results for 42 self-absorption correction factor values at energies of 40, 50, and 60 keV were in agreement with the calculations by MCNP6 simulation. This method offers an efficient and cost-effective approach to reducing computational time in environmental sample measurements.
