THE FOLK BELIEF IN PHYSIOGNOMY THROUGH VIETNAMESE FOLKSONGS AND PROVERBS

Abstract

Physiognomy studies the characteristics of the human body to predict a person's personality and destiny. An investigation of Vietnamese proverbs and folk songs shows that folk songs refer to a number of issues such as human personality, love stories, husbands and children, and other issues such as talent, fortune, money, human wealth, and longevity. Physiognomy in proverbs and folk songs is influenced by feudal ritual ideology and Buddhist teachings. With the refinement of time, today some judgments have shown their outdatedness and bias, especially those related to women. This study found that the units talking about physiognomy have their structure in the style of cause-effect and deduction-induction.
