Abstract

Gender prejudice is a common phenomenon in society and manifests in various forms. Among those, language is a frequently and easily recognizable mode of expression. Generally, women are often the ones who bear the brunt of prejudice from others. However, in daily communication, men also face constraints, norms, and societal expectations regarding their abilities, behaviors, conduct, and attitudes. These expectations arise from the beliefs, perspectives, and stereotypes that society imposes on them. Research shows that these prejudices not only affect how men perceive themselves but also profoundly impact how they interact and communicate with others in their families and communities. By analyzing conversational data that reflects prejudice against men, this study identifies the main speech acts commonly used by speakers to express gender prejudice. Studying gender prejudice against men in Vietnamese communicative language contributes to raising awareness about the power of the speech containing gender prejudice, thereby improving the choice of linguistic tools and communication strategies to minimize or, ideally, eliminate statements that reveal gender prejudice.
